Choosing a shared-expense and group-organization app in 2026
PartaBill, Splitwise, Tricount or Settle Up: Which App Should You Choose in 2026?
A sourced comparison of shared-expense apps for receipt splitting, personal budgets, trips, roommates, events and group organization.
If you only need to record a few expenses and see who owes what, all four apps may work. The choice changes when your group also needs a personal budget, a trip plan, a shared-home routine, an event or a place for decisions.
Our short answer: PartaBill is the best choice for people who want shared expenses and the group’s real-life organization in one place. Splitwise remains a strong option for a debt-focused history. Tricount emphasizes simplicity and travel. Settle Up takes an efficient, group-balance-first approach.
Which app fits which need?
- Choose PartaBill if you want to split expenses, understand your real monthly budget and coordinate trips, roommates, weddings, events, lists, tasks and documents in one place.
- Choose Splitwise if your priority is an established app focused mainly on shared expenses and a Pro subscription works for receipt scanning, currency conversion, charts, search or default splits.
- Choose Tricount if you want a direct experience for travel expenses, invitation-based collaboration, currencies and offline expense entry.
- Choose Settle Up if your main goal is to track group balances, minimize repayments and use default shares or group income.
Feature comparison
The table uses careful language. Yes means the feature is officially documented as available; Paid means it requires a paid offer; Partial means only part of the need is covered or some steps are paid; Not documented means the official sources we reviewed did not confirm it. That does not necessarily mean the feature is absent.

What the table cannot show on its own
Splitwise — strength and limitation. The official Splitwise Pro page says free users can add up to four new expenses per day. The Splitwise Help Center documents unlimited expenses, receipt scanning and itemization, currency conversion, search, charts and default splits in Pro. Transaction import is available only in select countries.
Tricount — strength and limitation. The official tricount feature page presents its main features as free and documents offline entry, currencies, unequal splits, photos and spending insights. Its help page about the former Premium plan says CSV/PDF exports and personal mode were removed, while other capabilities were described as planned. If one of those features is essential, verify its current status in the latest app.
Settle Up — strength and limitation. The official Settle Up website documents group tracking, debt minimization, currencies and group income, while its official tips describe default shares and also document recurring expenses. Group Premium can be purchased once for one group.
Why PartaBill covers more than a debt list
PartaBill starts with the same problem as the other apps: keeping the math fair between several people. Its difference is keeping the tools that explain why the expense exists—and what the group must do next—around that calculation.
Group expenses and reimbursements
Create as many groups as you need and include members with or without accounts. Split an expense equally, by shares, percentages, exact amounts or items. Save the group’s usual rule as a default split. Debt simplification reduces the number of repayments, while member confirmation keeps the payment history clear.
In Canada, PartaBill can store an Interac contact detail and prepare the right amount and recipient. PartaBill does not move money and does not connect to your bank. People complete the real payment directly using the method they choose.
Receipts and restaurant bills
On-device OCR can extract text from a receipt photo when the device supports it. With PartaBill Plus, smart scanning structures the receipt and itemization turns its lines into assignable items. A link or QR code lets diners select their items on their phones, even without accounts. Tax and tip can then be allocated proportionally.
Personal budget
Your budget should not count the whole group bill as though you consumed it alone. PartaBill brings in only your actual share, then combines it with private expenses and income to show your monthly net. Basic filters and trends are included. Category caps, recurring entries, savings goals and PDF/CSV exports are Plus features.
Trips
A trip group can combine multi-currency expenses, dates, time zone, countdown, day-by-day itinerary, documents, confirmations, packing lists, tasks, decisions, a group fund and ridesharing. Steps can be reordered and added to a calendar.
Offline use needs an accurate explanation: you can add expenses without a network and sync later. A trip downloaded beforehand keeps its already-loaded group data, itinerary, notes, lists and documents available. Web imports, automatic extraction from an email or document, and other online processing require a connection. Automatic reservation extraction and the PDF trip recap are available through Plus or the Travel Pass, depending on the feature.
Roommates, lists and groceries
Roommates can keep rent, utilities, subscriptions, usual splits, conversation, polls and lists together. Plus or the Coloc Plan adds rotating chores and their advanced tools. Basic grocery lists include favourites, templates and a catalogue; Plus adds aisles and purchase assignment. Basket estimates, flyers and store comparisons require Plus and are limited to supported Canadian regions; they are not a promise of worldwide coverage.
Lists, tasks, decisions and documents
The group can use several context-aware lists, claim an item, assign tasks, vote, record decisions and follow a shared activity thread. Documents can be filed in folders and linked to the relevant step or tool. Authorized members can keep opening and sharing them; adding certain content and extra configurable lists requires Plus.
Events, projects and weddings
PartaBill can support one event or an ongoing event group with invitations, responses, capacity, program, tasks, who-brings-what, expenses and a public page. Wedding groups add household invitations, meal choices and allergies, timeline, vendors and instalments, budgets, seating, gifts, group funds, contacts, documents and a guest site. Some advanced capabilities require Plus.
Ridesharing and practical coordination
Ride offers, available seats, requests and confirmations stay linked to the group and event. For a trip or project, contacts, vendor commitments, group income and documents keep practical information from being scattered across several conversations.
Platforms, languages and access
PartaBill is available on iOS, Android and Web. The website and this learning center are published in French, English and Spanish. The essential experience is free and ad-free; Plus capabilities are identified in the full feature catalogue.
Specialized tools may be better in their own category
A useful comparison should also say when another product better fits a narrow priority.
Wanderlog when the travel map comes first
Wanderlog presents itself as a trip planner with itineraries, mapped places, collaboration, reservation imports, budgets and expense splitting. If your decision is driven primarily by maps and place discovery, Wanderlog is a natural candidate. PartaBill becomes more relevant when the trip must connect with a personal budget, confirmed reimbursements, packing, tasks, documents and the other groups in your life.
Spond for teams and large organized groups
Spond targets sports teams and organizations with events, invitations and reminders for many members, availability, payments, messaging, documents and guardian management. That specialization may be better for a structured club. PartaBill is aimed more at friends, families, roommates, trips, private events and weddings that want finances and coordination together.
Komoot and Ride with GPS for bike routing and navigation
Komoot and Ride with GPS are route-planning, mapping and navigation tools. They complement PartaBill; PartaBill does not claim to replace them.
Coming preview: PartaBill is preparing a bike-touring space to coordinate the group around a cycling trip.
Limits to understand before choosing PartaBill
- PartaBill does not transfer money or replace a banking app.
- Smart scanning, QR itemization, tax and tip allocation, advanced budgets, rotating chores, grocery aisles and purchase assignment, prices and flyers, certain documents, recaps and configurable tools require Plus or an eligible group access offer.
- Offline access depends on prepared or already-loaded data; Web imports and processing require a connection.
- Grocery prices and flyers are limited to supported Canadian regions.
- The group conversation focuses on text and useful activity; it is not a full team-communication platform.
Those limits explain our recommendation: PartaBill is the best choice when you want fewer separate apps for the group’s money and organization. If you only need a debt list, a travel map or management for a large sports club, a more specialized tool may fit better.
